Saturday night, into Sunday
SH–88214 · Marisol Cabrera, RN · Brookvale Aged Care, Yarraville · 22:00 Sat 22 Aug → 06:30 Sun 23 Aug
Underpaid $54.60
The shift was paid at Saturday rates for all 8.5 hours because it started on Saturday.
Six and a half of those hours fell on Sunday. Rates attach to the hour, not to the shift.
Nobody queried it, because the shift was paid — and a shift that was paid does not
appear on any report. Merrivale runs roughly 3,100 shifts a year that cross midnight into
a higher-rate day.

Sixty-one dollars is not the problem. The rule that produced
it is, because the rule has run on every night shift since the payroll was configured.

The bands widen because the business grew. Merrivale filled 26,000 shifts in 2022–23 and 41,200 last year, so the same misconfiguration costs more every year it survives. The figure excludes interest and anything a regulator would add on top.

What the software does.
Merrivale’s system splits every shift at midnight before it prices anything, so an
hour is always paid at the rate for the day it fell in. A shift that spans a day
boundary is two priced segments that print as one line. The broker cannot forget the
rule, because there is nowhere to apply it by hand.
